It was on this day two years ago that my Aunt Agnes died, aged 94. It was her vivid memories of the RIC in Monaghan that gave me the inspiration to develop this site, and attempt to make it a repository of information, family history and objective fact relating to the old Irish constabularies.
I was laughing to myself at Mass this morning as I recalled her talking about her childhood, and the lack of electric lighting, and how she used to say the prayer: "Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and let the petrol light shine upon them, may they rest in peace, Amen"
Let the petrol light shine on her indeed.
