I appreciate that this is not a query but some people visiting the site may be interested in this topic.There were 25 men killed in that month, 6 of these in one ambush and 5 others in one other single day throughout various parts of Ireland.Thier average age was 30,the youngest was only 21 DI John Brady 70381.The native County that lost the most men in that month was Co.Galway and all but 3 were Irishmen.I have listed their names,service numbers,native County if applicable and a little about the incident:

 

1)Constable Edward Murphy 69231 a native of Co.Mayo died 2 September 1920, aged 24 and his colleague Constable Martin McCarthy 66580 a native of Co.Clare died 3 September 1920, aged  28 after been fatally wounded when their patrol was ambushed while cycling to court in Rathmacross Co.Roscommon.


2)Constable Edward Krumm 72732 born in Middlesex died 8 September 1920, aged 25 after been attacked at Galway Railway Station while off duty and his revolver taken and he was shot dead.


3)Constable Timothy Delaney 65728 a native of Queens County, aged 30 and his colleague Constable John Gaughan 64181 a native of Co.Mayo, aged 34 died 8 September 1920,both shot dead when their patrol was ambushed late at night in Tullow Co.Carlow.


4)Constable William Carroll 67944 a native of Cloonlaughlin,Co.Roscommon aged 26 died 14 September 1920 Died as a result of a road traffic accident at Douglas Co.Cork.


5)Constable James Donohoe 66183 a nayive of Co Monaghan aged 29 and his colleague Constable John Mahony 68276 a native of Castletownsend,Co.Cork aged 26 who both Died 20 September 1920 after been fatally wounded when their joint RIC and military patrol was ambushed in Abbeyfeale,Co.Limerick


6)Head Constable Peter Burke 62175 a native of Glenamaddy,Co.Galway aged 36 died 20 September 1920 shot dead in a public house in Balbriggan,Co.Dublin while on his way to an RIC depot.

7)Constable John A. Denham 72222 born in the Isle Of Wight Died 20 September 1920 aged 23.He was Accidentally shot with a rifle in unknown circumstances.


8)Constable Reginald Hardman, 71746 born in London aged 21

Constable Michael Harte 66362 a native of Co.Galway aged, 28

Constable John Hodnett 66278 a native of Co.Cork aged, 31

Constable Michael Kelly 64984 a native of Co.Roscommon aged 32

Constable John McGuire, aged 20

Sgt Michael Hynes 66009 a native of Co.Roscommon age, 29

Died 22nd September 1920 after being all fatally shot when a large number of IRA men ambushed their patrol in Rineen,Co.Clare.Sergeant Hayes survived the initial ambush but died two days later.


9)Constable Michael Brogan 61507 a native of Co.Galway died 25 September 1920, aged 41 when his RIC patrol was ambushed in Broadford,Co.Clare.


10)Constable Thomas Leonard 62331 a native of Knockcroghery,Co.Roscommon died 25 September 1920, aged 35 fatally shot while on foot patrol when ambushed by two gunmen on the Falla Road,Belfast.


11)Sgt Martin Morgan 58174 a native of Co.Galway Died 27 September 1920, aged 44.He was shot in an ambush while cycling to his barracks and died of wounds at Kilmacthomas,Co.Waterford.


12)Sgt Denis P. McGuire 57625 a native of Killyon,Co.Galway died 29 September 1920, aged 45

Fatally shot while outside a house being searched by the army at Ferbane in Kings County.

13)Constable Terence Flood a native of Drumsna,Co.Leitrim aged 35

Constable Edward A. Noonan a native of Co.Galway aged 26

Died 29 September 1920 after being shot dead when their police patrol was ambushed in Killoskehan,Co.Tipperary.


14)Const able John Downey 63680 a native of Co Cork aged, 35

Constable John Thomas Keeffe 67115 a native of Co.Clare aged 30

Died 29 September 1920 after being shot dead while together in a public house adjoining their barracks in O’Breins Bridge,Co.Clare.


15)Dist Insp James Joseph Brady 70381 a native of Co Dublin Died 30 September 1920, aged 21 after being fatally shot when his mobile patrol was ambushed by an IRA unitin Chaffpool,Co.Sligo.
