James Hall and William Allen - RIC pensioners - 1901 Census |
Lead | ||
|
I've found a relative listed in the 1901 census for Ballinasloe (where he was from) as an RIC pensioner, aged 50. He's single, and living as a boarder with another RIC pensioner, William Allen, in Ballinasloe. The other man was married and aged 56. Any info would be most appreciated

Write to the Garda Museum, Dublin giving as much detail as you can ie. your ancestors date of birth, his parents names, and the parish where he came from. The Garda Museum provided me with details of my ancestors RIC papers.

Maidrinrua,
Becuase of James age i would try, service No's 35817 & 38403, also i do know a Constable. James Hall 38354 was pensioned, Limerick in 1898, which also fit's your relative. The other pensioner you mentioned could be, William Allen, Constable 34046 pensioned Roscommon in 1897, if you are going to, N.A.Kew, this will give you a start. |

Hi Maidrinrua
William Allen was my great great grandfather. He was born in Laois and joined the RIC, married a Galway girl (known as Bridget/Delia) and was posted in Frenchpark in Roscommon. Then the family moved to Ballinasloe where they had some manner of a hotel. By 1911 they had moved into Galway City. William and Delia had 6 kids; Henry was my great grandfather, and he came to Dublin and became a journalist. Michael was Galway City coroner for many years. There was also Margaret, Annie, Mary and Christina (who married Patrick McAvinia, the first guard in Ireland). I'd be interested in any info you might have about James Hall. |

I originally come from Ballinasloe. In the 1950s a John Hall lived with his sister Mamie in a little shop in Dunlo Street. I do not think either of them married. There was also a Hall family in Poolboy who were farmers I think and belonged to the same family. There is a very good Ballinasloe Forum with a genealogy section (www.ballinasloe.com) and you should try that. There are queries on that site re "Halls". Sean

Hi folks,
I hadn't checked this in ages, and I hadn't realised all the great info you all supplied. I'll follow up on these. Thanks Maidrin Rua |

Hi Orla,Your information is fantastic, and explains why JH was living with the Allens and why he was somewhere else in 1911. I'm hoping to get his info so that I can go back a generation. I have him and some of his siblings and that's as far back as I've gone. Thanks, Maidrin Rua

Thanks Sean, I'm off the Poolboy Halls. The James Hall was an uncle of my grandfather's and they don't seem to have been from Poolboy originally (no record of them there in Griffiths Valuation). So I'm hoping that tracking back through James's details will give me info on where they came from. It's looking like it might be out Clontuskert direction.
BTW I didn't realise the Dunlo Halls were related to us. I must ferret that out further. Also, thanks for the info on B'sloe Forum. I regularly visit it and found a couple of cousins on it. Thanks for the help Maidrin Rua |

I cannot remember myself but I have been told that there was also a small electrical shop in Dunlo St run by a Hall man. He may have been one of the Poolboy Halls. It would have been just across the road from John and Mamie Hall.
I am not certain that John and Mamie were related to the Poolboy Halls but I think there was a connection. Sean
