The renowned historian and author Peter Hart has died, at the early age of 46. Hart's contribution to the study of Irish history during the period 1919-1922 was both seminal and controversial, challenging as it did many of the cherished republican myths and thinking.
A Canadian, Hart offered an outsider's insight into the IRA campaign of that period and, without condoning the actions of the Crown Forces, showed an understanding of the ordinary policeman of that time.
My sincere condolences to his family.
See this report of his death.
