A memorial service for the men killed in the Macroom ambush was held on the anniversary of their deaths, on 28th November 1921 at Portobello Barracks, Dublin. Courtesy Ballyroughan, these are extracts from an original order of service. 





Portobello Barracks is today known as Cathal Brugha Barracks, and is located in Rathmines.

The following information has never before been published online and provides an exciting avenue for further research. It has long been known that there was one survivor of the Kilmichael ambush and his name has been given (and accepted) as Henry Frederick Forde. It was believed he was left in a coma or brain damaged but no further trace of him could be found.

I received information from Klifton Snow that shows he was in fact Captain Frederick Henry Forde M.C (late R.F.A.), son of Colonel Lionel Forde C.M.G.
Colonel Forde died in late October 1926. Captain F.H. Forde emigrated to Southern Rhodesia where he died on May 18th 1941.

More work is needed to understand when he emigrated and what he did in Rhodesia, but plainly this shows that he made enough of a recovery to be able to travel to Africa and start a new life there. It also tends to reinforce the account added by Frank above, as being the recollections of someone actually present; and gives further credence to the take by the late Peter Hart as to what actually happened at that ambush.

The Times May 21 1941

On May 18, 1941, in Southern Rhodesia, Captain Frederick Henry Forde M.C., beloved elder and only surviving son of Mrs G.W.S. Morris and the late Colonel Lionel Forde C.M.G., R.A.

His mother, Gertrude Meredith Morris (nee Pollen) died on June 24 1952 in Epsom, Surrey. His brother 2/Lt Lionel Winnington Forde (6/Dorsetshire Regt) was KIA in the Great War on 8th June 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Poziers Memorial.
