Posts: 1640 Aug 17 10 8:45 PM Inspector-General	This is an actual photograph of a mural painted on the wall of 'B' Company's Mess. It was photographed by W.E. Crewe (see F Coy) and states "B. coy Badge, mess wall". They obviously had a budding artist in their ranks - this card brings together the Harp & Crown badge, a pint of porter, references to the pay (a pound note), grenades, guns, and police whistles. The royal flush presumably is a nod to a favourite pastime in the canteen. The motto means 'Second to None'. With thanks to Ballyroughan Peter Mc Edited 2 times by Peter Mc RIC Dec 9 12 6:08 PM.

Head Constable Posts: 15 Aug 18 10 9:02 PM	Absolutely fascinating mural. It's worth adding that the pay was quickly increased to £1 1s or a guinea a day as a recruitment letter from Tudor published in the Times in 1920 quoted that amount.

Recruit Posts: 1 Dec 18 10 12:17 PM	Hi all, I have some information about the B Coy. HQ in Templemore and how it came to be destroyed. In May 1921 Commandant Séan Scott of the local IRA received a message from Michael Collins informing him that B company were about to vacate the mansion of Sir John Carden atTemplemore Abbey, which they had commandeered in 1920. Collins directed that Templemore Abbey should be destroyed at all costs, ‘even at the loss of men’.Scott was surprised to learn that the Abbey was to be vacated as he had received no local intelligence to that effect. However, because of the implicit confidence which he had in Collins preparations were made to burn the mansion. The Abbey had been turned into a formidable HQ by ADRIC and was also an important symbolic target for the local IRA. as it was the former residence of the Carden family, notoriously unpopular landlords in the Templemore area. Scott was correct to have faith in the information supplied by Collins as shortly after the intelligence was received, and much to the relief of the I.R.A the Auxies were observed loading their lorries and leaving the Abbey. That night a party of fifteen IRA men collected thirty gallons of petrol from various premises in the area and broke into the mansion. The premises were set ablaze with some Volunteers receiving injuries in the process. Within a few hours the entire premises had been razed to the ground’. Some locals told me that a lot of furniture and other items were taken from the Abbey before it was burnt, so there may be stuff lying in attics around the town! All that remains today of the Abbey are some of the outbuildings and the gate lodge, which is near the Garda College, just before the right turn onto the Thurles road as you come from Borrisoleigh.

District Inspector 1st Class Posts: 82 Dec 22 10 5:15 AM	Does anyone know what the location of "B" Company was, when the Mess wall mural was photographed by W.E. Crewe, who by the way was never a member of "B" Company. I have tried to figure out the signature of the artist, without success, has anyone else been able to do so, it could be the same artist for the Christmas card. On the mural, below the bottle of Bass, is a skull and crossbones, this symbol has been associated with "Q" Company as a headgear badge. I am looking for specific dates for the arrival and departure of "B" Company at Templemore Abbey. An advertisment in the Tipperary Star newspaper, on Saturday the 1st January 1921, described an upcoming sale of the contents of the Abbey, by auction on the 4, 5, & 6th of January 1921. As the sale was to take place at the Abbey, starting each day at noon, presumably this took place before the Auxiliaries arrived to take over the premises.

The wall Mural and Christmas card of B Company Auxiliary Div, I concur with you the artist was the one and same person, who that person was I have not as yet worked out, but will persevere. Where was B Company in 1920? I can not give specific dates, but for what its worth from old notes, in December 1920, the Family of James D Leahy (County Engineer) of Ballygowen House. Newcastle-West. Co Limerick. had members of the company billeted on them , and after James death his English wife Alice and Family returned to England in 1924 and as she kept many souvenirs brought with her the B Coy Christmas card - Group photo of B Company and Requisition order,I saw these items in the late 1960s but unfortunately , I did not note the date of requisition order,or signature on card, the photo had no details on, I know these items were still with the family up tell 1998 but present where abouts unknown. You are correct on the count of W.E.Crewe,never being a member of "B" Company his profile is on this site,and i can not say with any certainty he took the photograph of the wall mural ,as his papers consist of a miscellaneous collection of documents-pamphlets-manuals-christmas cards-photographs-insignia badges etc,plus his medals & hand bills. In 1958 Crewe sat down and wrote of his experience's in, Auxiliaries-Gendarmerie-and the setting up of The British Legion Police (which never took off) nothing historically startling, but his part in, The Auxiliary Division, i will post on this site in the near future. Note-Leahy, B Company Christmas card, is identical to the one shown on this site. Requisition order, Oct, Nov, 1920. date not known. Edited 6 times by ballyroughan Jan 16 12 10:56 PM.

District Inspector 1st Class Posts: 82 Feb 8 11 5:04 AM	ballyroughan, Sorry it took me so long to acknowlege your reply, not paying attention I guess. I found your remark about "B" Coy. being at Newcastle - West, really interesting. Gen. Crozier mentioned (in Ireland for Ever) that he sent a Company to Limerick as one of the first nine Companies put into the field. I thought that "B" Coy. might have fitted for Limerick, due to my being unable to find any information on their early deployment, this is what led to my query. Sligo is often mentioned in connection with "B" Coy., I have yet to find any information that confirms this. I dont usually like using Gen. Crozier as a reference as I find his memory of events quite muddled at times.

I never met him but he was my uncle & he never married, he left Ireland in 1924 with his mother & sister Emily (Lala) who married a man called Healy I believe. My father never talked about them. I wounder did you know Alice or Lala?, or would you know what happened to his collection ? I do hope it went to someone who will share it with others,Alice was my granmother and I would love to know where she lived or is buried Thanks Maurice Leahy

I have met some of the Healy 's over the years to whom he was close, i don't know where his mother is buried but can find out. if you want further information use your Yuku account,and leave me a message, as i feel B Company Aux Div. an inappropriate topic, or site, for discussion of a collectors life and Family, so i will delete my postings on Mike after one week.
