I am researching my maternal family tree and have recently been told that my g-grandfather, William Johnston Russell was a Black and Tan after WWI. How can I confirm this is true? My mother and grandmother have no recollection of this ever having been mentioned before. The information came from my grandmother's brother in New Zealand!
William (Billy) moved to Ballymena from Glasgow (Greenock) where he was born 13.05.1882 to look for work. He then moved to Belfast and married my g-grandmother, Agnes (Aggie) McIvor Turnbull (also born in Glasgow) at Sinclair Seaman's Presbyterian Church 10.07.1911. He is listed as a Plater's helper on the marriage certificate. My grandfather, William Johnston jnr was born in 1912 and his brother, George two years later. We have a 2 photographs of my g-grandfather in a uniform which it was always believed was his soldier's uniform from WWI (North Irish Horse ?? ) taken with Aggie and his eldest two sons a couple of years apart when they look 3/1 and 6/4. Billy and Aggie went on to have at least 6 other children. Billy died in Belfast in 1950. Aggie lived to 91 and died in 1983.
