Hello - I'm researching my Great Grandfather Terence Regan who was in the RIC from 1863 to 1890. I have a question regarding the 'Punishments' section in his service history. Although otherwise unblemished, his record shows two fines which look like 'F20/- B59015/4853' and 'F30/-C55905/73589'. Do the reference numbers give any clue as to what the offences were ?
Terence was recommended to the force by a C. Strickland JP, who I am assuming is Charles Strickland, the land agent and town planner for Lord Dillon in Co. Mayo who appears to have been active in famine relief efforts some years earlier, also building the settlement of Charlestown and helping with the construction of the cathedral at Ballaghadareen. Is anyone aware of him recommending others to the RIC ? More generally, was there a set system for being recommended and could only certain people fulfil this role ?
Any answers will be very gratefully received.
