I would like to find out more information about my Gr. Grandmother's brother, Patrick Mulchrone, who was a member of the RIC in Co. Westmeath. I find him on ancestry.com's index to RIC records as enlisting in 1879 at age 23. That would make him born around 1856. He was born in Co. Mayo, possibly in Westport. I find him in the 1901 census listed as an Acting Sgt. RIC living in St. Feighin's, Fore West, Co. Westmeath with his wife Mary (Spain) Mulchrone (b.Tipperary) and 4 daughters (all born in Westmeath). In 1911, he is living in Streamstown, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath and under his signature he writes "Sergt. R.I.C." Can anyone tell me where I can obtain the actual RIC records for Patrick Mulchrone. Would the fact that he was a Sargent mean that there would be more information about him? I was also wondering what happened to members of the RIC when the Constabulary became the Civic Guard? Patrick would have probably been a bit old to become part of the Civic Guard but maybe they looked for experienced officers? I have no idea when he died. Thanks for your help!
