I am trying to help a friend with her family tree. Her Great Grandfather,James Farrell, emigrated to NZ as a settler in 1861 after resigning from the 8th
regiment of foot in Gibraltar.
His (James') death certificate says that his father's name was Edward Farrell and his occupation was Irish Constabulary.
I wonder if you could tell me where I might look to find out if this information is correct.
I had a look at Jim Herlihy's index book in our local library and there are five Edward Farrells listed, though assuming that James' father would
have had to have been born at the turn of the 19th century, all but one seem too late to be him.
It has been suggested to me that Edward may have been a member of an earlier constabulary from which the force was formed.
The only information I have is from the son's death cert, which I can't scan and attach to an email because it is too big for my scanner.Details as
follows:
James Farrell
born Nenagh, Tipperary in approx 1824
Father's name Edward Farrell
mother's name Anne Hale
Father's occupation Irish Constabulary.
James married Bridget Quinn in Dublin in approx 1852(although on Bridget's death certificate, it says they were married in Thurles,Tipperary !)
Their children's names were Ann,Mary Edward Joseph,James and Emily. The last two were born in NZ.
So, all I really know is that his father would probably have been born about 1800 & his mother was Ann Hale.I believe I read somewhere that he wouldn't have served in a county where he had relatives and also that if he married, the Constabulary would have had to approve.
I have sent three emails to Jim Herlihy via the email address given on the Garda website and received no reply (I think the first one was an old address, though it didn't bounce back) .I didn't feel I should pester him again, and someone advised me to write to the museum directly, which I did.But they said they don't hold earlier records.
I also tried to order some records from the local LDS -I think they were microfiche - and the lady rang me to say my request had been refused
No doubt I ordered the wrong ones.
Would you be able to tell me how (if it is possible)I can get more details about Edward Farrell? Though it would not surprise me to learn that his career in the Irish constabulary is not based on fact ,I would like to be able to prove or disprove the story.
Thank you in advance
Barbara
