I came across this interesting little article - dating from 1905 - "The police in Rosscarbery were awakened on the morning of the 11th March by one of the inhabitants of the town, who stated he was afraid to proceed out of the place owing to an unusual roaring noise and loud bleating of cattle and sheep in the vicinity. Sergeant Anderson and two constables immediately accompanied him to a peninsula at the bay and found a huge whale on the shore roaring in a most pitiful manner. They immediately put an end to its suffering by shooting it in the head".
