This is the 1st cousin of my 3rd great grandfather (also named Henry McLain)
He was born in Ballymahon, Longford in 1831 and worked as laborer before joining the Revenue Police in 1850. In 1857, the Irish Constabulary took over the role of the Revenue Police, and Henry became a constable.
When this photo was taken circa 1865, he was a sub-constable based in Enniskillen.
He retired in 1881 as head-constable and died in 1912 in Ballinamalard.
His brother James also joined the RIC with him.
Henry's father Richard McLain was a Lieutenant in the King's County Militia, serving that regiment from 1793-1829
