Sergeant Richard (Dick) Hearns joined the Garda in 1928 aged 21, having previously served in the Irish Army where he had qualified as a physical training
instructor. He became interested in boxing and entered a number of contests near his native Ballina. Garda Commissioner Eoin O'Duffy heard about his boxing
prowess, and being keen to promote the sport in the force, ensured that Hearns was taken on as a recruit. He was a boxer in the Garda from 1928 until 1939 and
then served as Drill Instructor for new recruits at the Garda Depot in Phoenix Park, Dublin from 1939 to 1964 when he retired.

All the trophies won by Dick Hearns are on display in the Garda Siochana Museum in Dublin Castle. Also in the archives is a 1936 Olympic commemorative medal that belonged to Hearns. Although Ireland did not participate in the 1936 Games it may show that he attended that event.

To The Third Policeman:
Your Grand Uncle Dick Hearns was also my Grand Uncle, or more precisely my Grand Half-Uncle Dick. My Grandmother, Mary Ellen Heaney (nee Hearns) was his half-sister. I'm the only of the American Heaneys who found their back to Europe and am now living in Austria. If you'd like to contact me, you can reach me at office@margreiter-translation.com. I'd enjoy hearing from you. Warm regards, Mary Margreiter (nee Heaney) |
