Received the records. Can anyone help with translating the awards and confirming if he was a son of a RIC? I couldn't translate the recommending person either. No Constable Mackin in the index. Thanks. Here's what I found:

Now the hard part, figuring out the father's name.
I re-read the records. You are right, it is a fancy H so it's Head Constable Mackin. I see two Makins in the index (not sure why they didn't show up before?) with the proper timing John Mackin/21/Armagh/1851 and Thos Mackin/22/Armagh/1852. I'll be looking up their records as well.

It could be the Jub Rec as you mentioned...date next to the entry is 26.6.84 or 87
The 2nd Half Yearly Supplement I didn't mention before but the date is 10.2.88

Just dug up the census for Richard Lewis' Barracks in Ballybrittas and found the following:

R.L. (Richard Lewis ), Constable, Church of Ireland, Read and Write, 41, Farmers Son, Married, Co. Kings

A.B. (probably Andrew Bracken ), Constable, Roman Catholic, Read and Write, 32, Farmers Son, Married, Co. Kings


The probably names were derived from the local census forms and the signatures of the constables.

They all say farmer's son, but Richard Lewis entered below hieght standards so thought he was a son of a RIC. Discipline and standards were high in the RIC so the contradictions in documentation leave the father's occupation indeterminate. Maybe one and not the other, maybe both as he retired from his RIC duties back to the farm.

Fun to see that the Barrack's might be currently up for sale.

aceman67 - I use the ancestry.com index to find the film number for the particular RIC member and then go to the local LDS family history center and request the film.  2-4 weeks later the film arrives and I review the entries.
