Sub Inspector Mills, Leitrim in the 1850s

Sergeant Posts: 4 25-Apr-2011 9:33 AM	Remove this ad In trying to trace the origins of my maternal gr grandfather I am looking for help to find where Sub Inspector Mills lived and was based in 1851. My gr grandfather, Francis Sweeney, joined the Service in 1851 (I have his service record) and was recommended for appointment by Sub Inspector Mills. I'm assuming that because Francis was born in Leitrim that SI Mills was based in Leitrim. Any assistance greatly appreciated. Frank

Mills and have Joseph Mills (from Wicklow, Protestant, and single in 1871) RIC 8611 Sub Constable July 1847 Acting Constable June 1852 Constable December 1853 2 Head Constable October 1863 1 Sub Inspector October 1871 (Leitrim) 2 Sub Inspector April 1877 (transferred to Galway WR 1 April 1878) Pensioned 12 Nov 1880 So he was in Leitrim in 1871 as S.I., not 1851. The only other Mills in the Register who was an officer was James Cunningham Mills and he became a Sub Inspector in 1859 aged 19. Peter Mc

Have not long returned from Ireland following the death of my mother and am only now catching up on mail. I made an error on my original entry - Francis Sweeney, my maternal grandfather, joined the RIC in 1872 and not 1851 (his birth date) as I stated. I see from your investigation that Sub Inspector Mills was stationed in Leitrim from 1871 to 1877. Do we know where in Leitrim he was stationed/lived as it may help narrow down my grandfather's exact place of birth? As SI Mills recommended him for appointment I'm assuming he knew him reasonably well i.e. from or before his arrival in Leitrim. Again, apologies for the cock up. Frank

Posts: 1149 2-Nov-2011 9:53 PM Inspector-General	I'm very sorry to learn of the loss of your mother Frank, another link with the past gone and a source of family history now closed. As regards Mills, I don't have a Constabulary List for that period so can't say what district he was in. But one of the museums/libraries may have a relevant copy, or a trawl of the Irish Times online archive may get you something. Mills may not have 'known' your grandfather, but as the recommending officer he would have interviewed him or at least sought a testimonial from the local sergeant of police.
