Biographical history: FARADAY, John Alexander Mulloy (1899-1986)
Born 1899 in California, USA, of British nationality. Educated at Dover College, Dover, England. Commissioned in Irish Guards (Captain), 1917. Wounded in action on Western Front & awarded Military Cross, 1918. Demobilised, 1919.Joined Auxiliary Division, Royal Irish Constabulary, 20 October 1920. Auxiliary number 788. Platoon Commander G Company (Killaloe) from 20 Oct 1920 until 1 Feb 1921. 2 I/C O Company (Dunmanway).District from 2 Feb 1921 to 21 May 1921. Inspector RIC (Kilfinane).
Joined British Gendarmerie and proceeded to Palestine, 30 March 1922 (British Gendarmerie number 19842). Transferred to Palestine Police, c.1924, rising to rank of Assistant Superintendent; service throughout the country, including Gaza, Jaffa, Beersheba, Nazareth & Jerusalem. Awarded King’s Police Medal. Promoted to 2nd in command of Arab Legion with rank of Brigadier under Glubb Pasha, 1939.
Resigned on outbreak of Second World War, with a view to rejoining Irish Guards - but was considered too old. Commissioned in RAF Volunteer Reserve, 1940, rising to rank of Group Captain. Employed as RAF Provost Marshal in London. Discharged, 1946.Became De La Rue’s agent in Middle East and Spain; domiciled in Cairo & Madrid - fluent Arabic & Spanish speaker, c.1948. Retired c.1955, living first in Hayling Island and later in London.
