Thanks for that,Michael.Interesting that there were 17 Harnetts who served in the RIC.It's not a very common name and would be associated with the West
Limerick area. It's possible that there is further family involvment in the police force.Any clues on that?
At least 4 of William's sons served in the british army during WW1,one of them being my granfather,Patrick.Another,Willie, was a Connaught Ranger serving with the 5th at Gallipoli and in the Balkans. He is buried in Egypt.Tom remained in the regular army after the war.Christy joined late in the war and saw no service. This propensity to join may have been a family thing but is just as likely to have been due to the strong Redmondite support in the South Tipperary/Waterford area. There must be some family photos somewhere,I'll do some digging. Regards Niall |

Thanks,Michael,I'm working on the service records.
Incidently,I came across a report of the murder of two Gardaí on May 7th,1924 at Cregg,Carrick-on-Suir while attempting to arrest an armed suspect.Sergent Thomas Griffin and John Murrin. This gives an idea of the anarchy abroad at the time and the risks to the new unarmed force. It took foresight and courage to remain an unarmed force. |

It was indeed courageous, given the violence - both casual and organised - of those times. But a correct decision, and indeed the RIC knew it was a grave
mistake when they were told to re-commence carrying arms in 1917.
I know Hartnett retired on pension from C-on-S in 1911, but that's the extent of my knowledge of the man. When did Willie Hartnett die, as I can't find him on CWGC? |

You might want to check the service record of a John Harnett-65879 (son?),the only one who enlisted from Tipp in 1911 and and a John Harnett -44883.He joined in 1879 aged 21.Your G grandfather joined 1881 aged 19.Could they be brothers? Regards Michael |

I'm almost certain John Harnett 65879 is his son. This is news to me,and also to my mother, but it fits in.It seems he spent most of his life in England and
died quite young, never having married.Seems a familiar story, fill in the blanks.
Found these as well, all from Co.Limerick; Daniel Harnett, born 1862,joined1881 John P Harnett,born1857,joined 1879 Patrick Harnett,born1859,joined 1878 William Harnett, born 1862,joined 1881 The last one is my Greatgranfather. If you look at his census return for 1911 you will note the names of his first four sons are the same.I'm betting some or all of these are related, possibly brothers. This story might grow a bit yet. |

It was the John P that I was referring too.It would not have been at all uncommon for brothers/sons/cousins to have served! |

Hi All, John P was my great great grandfather and I have a bit of info on him. His daughter Mary Kate Harnett married Philip McCabe who's father John McCabe was also in the RIC and based around Co Mayo and Achill Island.
John P was John Patrick Harnett born 1857 who was 22 years when he joined the RIC on 14/10/1879 and was 5 foot 10. His native County was Limerick his religion was Catholic. He was married first in 1886 to Ann Hayes (originally from Galway) and she died and he married again in 1897 a lady named Ellen Hourihan from Cork. His trade was a farmer and he was reccomended for the RIC by Head Constable Kiely. He worked in Galway E.R in 1880 and then went to Tipperary N.R. in 1884 and finally Mayo in 1885. He got promoted to Acting Sergeant in 1892 and Sergeant in 1894. On his record it also states " Jubilee Record 29/6/1887 I.H.Y.S. & £3 21/8/1898 III. H.Y.S 11/10/1901" and I am not sure what this refers to. He was pensioned in 1902 and Im not sure what happened after that. Hope this is informative !!!! |

Here he is. http://www.census.nationa...yo/Achill/Cashel/743499/ and http://www.census.nationa...s.ie/reels/nai001101580/ It appears that when he retired he became a court clerk. Here's his family in 1901 http://www.census.nationa...s.ie/reels/nai001100967/ .He certainly was a farmer's son, marrying Eily,a national school teacher and acquiring some land of his own.He appears to have done well.

Hello,Eileen. | #12 | ||

William Harnett 46674 ,my Greatgrandfather ,was also recommended by Head Constable Kiely in Limerick so it's very probable they were brothers.Williams' first two sons were named John and Patrick(my grandfather),probably after his own father and it is likely John Patrick was the oldest son. So,Eileen,we could be cousins.
William was posted to Galway W.R. in 1881,Cork E.R. in 1885 and Tipperary S.R. in 1891.He appears here in the 1901 census http://www.census.nationa...Murgasty__P_O__/1720842/ and in the 1911 census at William St. Carrick-on-Suir. He was promoted Acting Sergeant in 1902 and Sergeant in 1904 and pensioned on 5/9/1911.He married Catherine Mahoney of Cork on 30/4/1891.He was connected in Kerry. How could I find where in Limerick Head Constable Kiely was serving in 1879/81? |

Hi WCC.
We could most definatley be cousins !! I heard stories that John P eventually lived out his days in Cork and that could be true as it seems thats where his second wife (Eily) was from. All I could find on Head Constable Kiely was from Limerick library in 1901. www.limerickcity.ie/media/Media,11475,en.pdf . If you have any more info on the Harnetts would love to hear it !!! |

My GGF was Timtothy Kiely from Limerick who joined the RIC in 1853.
I'm wondering now if this John Kiely was a relative. Did anyone find out anymore? |
