My grandfather, Charles Sheeran (69403), joined the RIC in 1918 and was stationed in Tipperary South Riding. He joined from Kilkenny where his father, Thomas
(54317), was a sergeant. Charles is unusual in that he is listed as having three native counties - Waterford, Kilkenny and Leitrim. There were close family
connections all three counties.
Just before disbandment, Charles was transferred to the Castle Guard Company in Dublin on 1 April 1922. He was disbanded in Derry on 31 May. He then joined the RUC.
I am interested in finding out more about his service in Tipperary. One of my uncles has told me that my grandfather was involved in an incident when a policeman and an IRA man were killed. The RIC patrol was ambushed and the policeman standing next to my father was shot dead.
I thought this may have been the ambush near Annacarthy on 6 May 1921 when Sgt James Kingston was killed, but my uncle says that was not the name of the policeman, although he can only half remember the name.
There cannot have been too many incidents in Tipperary when an RIC man and an IRA man were killed and there must be official reports and possibly newspaper reports so I am keen to know where to look for these.
I am also keen to find out more about where he was stationed.
The curator at the PSNI museum thought the transfer to Dublin Castle may have been because my father was a marked man. He never returned to the South.
