My great grandfather, Henry Francis Lambe, was born in Armagh around 1858. He joined the RIC at 18 and served in Mullingar, Newtown, Co.Kilkenny, Newry in Co.
Down, Kells in Co.Meath and finally again in Newry where he was acting sergeant before he retired from the force aged 37 in 1895. I wonder why he retired so
young. I get the impression it may have been ill health as he died at what today would be regarded as quite young.. 51 yrs. I found his record on a visit to
Kew in London and I was curious as to what some figures in his record meant. Can anyone help? the numbers were thus.. "Kilkenny
41746D/78320" and "Down 42326D/88850" and "Meath 15564D. " Also "pensioned of
11 Sept 1895 42326D/7697." He was also fined three times.. 20/- on 17/5/1878; 20/- on 28/4/1881; and 10/- 0n 15/3/1882
. All of these fines occurred when he was based in Mullingar. I think he didn't get on too well with his sergeant!
Finally, my own father, who was born long after my GG father died remembers passing the Newry (by now the RUC) police barracks. A policeman called him back to show him a photograph. It was a picture of Henry Francis posing in a picture of RIC tug-of-war team. He was sitting in the middle sitting behind a coil of rope with 5 or 6 other team mates. I guess the picture was taken in Newry. How I would love to get a copy of that picture.
Would like to hear from anyone whose ancestors served in any of those areas my great grand father served in and around the same era...I know that's a long shot.
Best Wishes to all. TL.
