One of the simplest methods may be to ring the local Garda station. You can be guaranteed an answer as i was about a barracks in Swinford Co Mayo by a local Garda. Michael Guilfoyle |

Hi Mark
Will post a modern photo asap pf this building, known as Kincora House as far as I know. My GF Stephen Kirwan, Sgt RIC was serving there when he was killed in Ballyboughil in 1921. If you want to see an old photo, go to: http://www.balbriggan.net/No1Brangan.htm Cheers Des |

I've been searching for an RIC man in the rating records in Slane (Co. Meath) 1868-75, which I know was his posting, but can't find him. I've been assuming that as he was married he would not have lived in barracks. Is this assumption correct? Any other ideas why he might not have a rating record?

Some married men did indeed live in barracks, with their families. Not very common, and it depended on the size of the barrack. Some others lived apart from their wives, due to a variety of circumstances.

Google Streetview is great for this. I found the old RIC station in Goresbridge by looking up the village in Google maps. It's surprising how many towns have a Barrack street - dead giveaway. Drag the wee Streetview man into Barrack Street and there's the tell-tale radio mast behind the Garda station. Lovely old building.
Also good for getting a look at the house your forebears lived in in 1901, or 1911. |
