My grandfather, born in Ballybrittas, Ireland, in 1900 to Richard Lewis, occupation RIC. I found Richard Lewis in the index and ordered the records from LDS. Assumed he was the Richard Lewis that joined 1879 at age 20. Looking forward to finding out more. I'm researching Richard Lewis - RIC, enlisted 1879 at age 20 (LDS records incoming). I have another document that states he was "RIC Pensioned". And another "Retired Civil Servant" I read RIC information that stated pensions were available after 25 years. Was this mandatory? Posts: 81 17-Jul-2009 11:07 PM Inspector-General	Kayakbr - Glad you're enjoying the site. I've combined your two posts in to one as they are really part of the same thread. I don't know anything about Richard Lewis but if you need any help understanding his service record feel free to ask. There was no mandatory pension service other than retirement at age 60. Police were not encouraged to retire - indeed there was a significant staffing shortfall through most of the early decades of the 20th century - but large numbers of RIC did indeed take the opportunity to emigrate or continue their policing careers in other lands. I couldn't translate the recommending person either. No Constable Mackin in the index. Thanks. There are Mackins in the index, in this case it could be you've misread the entry and it is Head Con(stable) Mackin. I don't believe there was an officer of that name. I don't know what 'Sub Rec' is; I thought it may have been Jub(ilee) Rec(ord) but the date doesnt fit; the second one is an award published in the 2nd Half Yearly Supplement and is probably for good police duty. I'd guess June 1884 but it depends how you've transcribed the record. Family connections in Dublin and Kilkenny. Peter Mc

District Inspector 3rd Class Posts: 5 10-Aug-2009 8:07 PM	Now the hard part, figuring out the father's name. I re-read the records. You are right, it is a fancy H so it's Head Constable Mackin. I see two Makins in the index (not sure why they didn't show up before?) with the proper timing John Mackin/21/Armagh/1851 and Thos Mackin/22/Armagh/1852. I'll be looking up their records as well. It could be the Jub Rec as you mentioned...date next to the entry is 26.6.84 or 87 The 2nd Half Yearly Supplement I didn't mention before but the date is 10.2.88 Thank you again.

Posts: 83 10-Aug-2009 9:48 PM Inspector-General	The Jubilee Record date would be 29 June 1887, so it is probably that date. I don't know what the record signifies but I believe it was a small monetary reward to all members of the force with 'good' records, as not every serving member has this noted as an entry. District Inspector 3rd Class Posts: 6 21-Sep-2009 5:51 PM	Remove this ad Just dug up the census for Richard Lewis' Barracks in Ballybrittas and found the following: Form H Co: Queens Parlimentary Division: Leix Poor LawUnion: Mountmellick District Electoral Division: Ballybrittas Townland: Ballyshanduff Portion (?) Town or Village: Ballybrittas J. D (probably James Devlin), Sergeant, Roman Catholic, Read and Write, 42, Farmers Son, Married, Co. Caven R.S. (probably ???), Constable, Roman Catholic, Read and Write, 44, Farmers Son, Married, Co. Cork, English and Irish R.L. (Richard Lewis ), Constable, Church of Ireland, Read and Write, 41, Farmers Son, Married, Co. Kings A.B. (probably Andrew Bracken ), Constable, Roman Catholic, Read and Write, 32, Farmers Son, Married, Co. Kings The probably names were derived from the local census forms and the signatures of the constables. They all say farmer's son, but Richard Lewis entered below hieght standards so thought he was a son of a RIC. Discipline and standards were high in the RIC so the contradictions in documentation leave the father's occupation indeterminate. Maybe one and not the other, maybe both as he retired from his RIC duties back to the farm. District Inspector 3rd Class Posts: 8 6-Jan-2010 8:47 PM	Confirmed the occupation of the father Thomas Lewis as retired RIC from the marriage certificate of Richard Lewis. Thomas joined in 1831 from Meath. I have ordered his records.

Posts: 197 15-Jan-2010 9:28 PM Inspector-General	As regards ordering records from the PSNI Museum, I got the following update: "As far as I am aware we are up to date in dealing with our enquiries, there was a delay as we were closed over the whole Christmas and New Year period. Genealogical enquiries are usually answered within a week to ten days. The mechanism for ordering a search (the standard fee for which is £25) is to go to https://www.paypal-market...dmoney/pay_for_goods.htm and offer payment to museum@pani.police.uk. We can receive requests direct or forwarded from the PSNI website." I don't want to get into a discussion about the relative merits of research providers within this part of the forum, if anyone wants to provide feedback or alternative service record providers then can I suggest opening a new topic on the Discussion part of this site. District Inspector 3rd Class Posts: 9 23-Feb-2010 5:48 PM	Peter - I hope I'm not discussing merits just responding: aceman67 - I use the ancestry.com index to find the film number for the particular RIC member and then go to the local LDS family history center and request the film. 2-4 weeks later the film arrives and I review the entries.
