Many thanks for confirming the RIC connection and for the likely numbers.
This now points me in the right direction, so my next trip will be to the National Arcgives in a month or so.

My ancestor was George Kennedy and I have details of his daughter's birth which confirms he  was  a serving police officer in Castlecomer, Kilkenny in 1863. I believe he had died by the time his daughter married in 1888.

My question I guess is, what force is he likely to have been in?  Would it have RIC and if not, can anyone suggest which one it was?
