The renowned historian and author Peter Hart has died, at the early age of 46. Hart's contribution to the study of Irish history during the period 1919-1922 was both seminal and controversial, challenging as it did many of the cherished republican myths and thinking.A Canadian, Hart offered an outsider's insight into the IRA campaign of that period and, without condoning the actions of the Crown Forces, showed an understanding of the ordinary policeman of that time.My sincere condolences to...

Notwithstanding your comments about Harris, which I can't disagree with, it's fair to point out that Peter met Harris a few years ago and found him to be very personable. I knew Peter a little bit and will miss his company. It's such a pity that he died in mid- career as I feel sure that he had much more to offer us in terms of research, perhaps even surpassing what he had already achieved in his brief life.

The following is,in my opinion,a more balanced view, .http://www.irishtimes.com.../0731/1224275888326.html
I have read his book 'The I.R.A. and its Enemies' a number of times and found it to be very thought provoking .It does, however, contain a number of factual inaccuracies which have led to legitimate criticisms of this book and fueled a healthy debate. His are not the definitive words on this period of Irish history but, certainly, a valuable contribution

Senator Harris' ''eulogy'' has very little to do with Peter Hart, but alot more to do with his own agenda and those he wishes to denigrate at the present moment. He is a professional commentator and contrarian and it's his job to jump up and down. His use of Peter Hart in this regard is odious and does not reflect the man himself.Peter Hart deserves better.
