Arthur Simey's son, Cyril (Charles) Stillingfleet Aylmer Simey, was in the 1928 Olympic Fencing Team!

Alfred J D Simey was born on the 9th May 1875 in Sunderland, Co. Durham. He worked as an analyst at the Bass Brewery there for 3 years before applying to join the RIC as an officer cadet on the 27th January 1900, register number 59415.

Whilst in training at the Phoenix Park Depot (alongside my own grandfather, number 59393) he saw duty during the visit of Queen Victoria to Ireland, for which he was awarded the Visit to Ireland Medal 1900 (Cadet A.J.D. Simey R.I.C.).

He subsequently served as District Inspector in Tipperary (Killenaule); Limerick (New Pallas) and Cork (Cork City) before volunteering for service in the Great War. He was given a temporary commission as Captain in the Army Services Corps from 18 Dec 1915 to 13 Feb 1919. The grave of Capt. AJD Simey, D.I. R.I.C. Served in the ASC during the 1914-18 war, Assistant Provost Marshal VI Division; in command of the firing party on at least 3 occasions (including that of Harry Farr) for those 'shot at dawn'. Later DI, Kenmare County Kerry until 1922.

The inscription reads:

"In Very Loving Memory Of / ALFRED JAMES DOWNES SIMEY / D.I., R.I.C. / Who Died December 8th 1931, From The / Effects Of Gas While On Service In / France During The War 1914-1918"

"And In Very Loving Memory Of / His Wife / Hilda Katherine Simey nee Stillingfleet / 1875 - 1970 / A Much Loved Mother And ..../ R.I.P."

His mortal remains lie in the churchyard at Fontmell Magna, Dorset.
