Ballyroughan, your copy of the record is clearer than mine. Six years on the force and g-granddad didn't understand that a sub-constable who goes toe-to-toe with a constable will lose? Maybe that's why he never rose above sub-constable. Many thanks.

Michael, Thanks for the info on Bridge Street. I don't know where Ambrose is buried. Newry or Co Kerry, his birthplace, I presume.

Thanks.

Many thanks, ballyroughan.

The date the pair solved the case is listed in the Parliamentary Papers mentioned above as 5 April 1870. The information you found would indicate that the official RIC file reflected this by 30 June. Listed under "Rewards, Marks of Distinction, and Favourable Records" on the copy I have of Ambrose's RIC record is "H.Y.[?] S. 5/4/70 C129?7" and an unreadable word beneath. From the date, this refers to the sheep-stealing case.

I should mention that something is written on Ambrose's record under "Punishments", but I can't read it.

They not only caught the culprit, but recovered the victim, too!

Thanks, Lurgan.
I've been trying to determine which newspaper to search for possible clues, and your suggestion is very helpful.
Ambrose lived on Bridge Street which, I've been told doesn't look the same.

Hi Richard

Great story.Even more interesting as I lived on the Rathfriland Road for many years.I'm not quite sure that there would be an obituary for your Great Grandfather.I tried without success to obtain one in relation to my Great Grandfather.A long shot maybe the local paper at that time 'The Frontier Sentinal' which is stored in Newry Library.Hope this helps.
