Hi folks,

First post.

While researching my family tree, I have recently discovered that my Great-Grandfather served in the RIC special reserve (Tans) during the war of independence.
It seems (from Ancestry.com) that he enlisted in 1921. I have further discovered that he was shot dead on 14th May 1921, while on weekend leave, and is buried
in the RIC plot in Glasnevin. The ancestry.com records show two Film numbers: 852095 (PAGE 114) & 2095 (PAGE 114), which are so similar I presume...

My GF Stephen left a widow Ellen, 9 kids and another one on the way......eldest was only 14 at the time. Dunno how they all survived after for so long (mostly) & all did so well. My Ma Frances (2nd youngest) was the last of the family to die, peacefully in 2007 aged 89. I guess her dad sincerely worked and fought for peace in bad old times, but she never knew him.

It's absolutely no bother for me to look up the service record for RIC member no. 78135 & also check other Redmonds listed as RIC members.
Will let you know, hopefully before this weekend.
Fingers crossed.....I'm sure you know the feeling - YEAH, got him/her!
Des,

Thanks for this. Very interesting about the name - my ggf's name was definitely Robert. I wonder was the inscription Richard a mistake, or maybe I'll find yet that he signed up using this name for some reason (?)

You mention the death cert - I just recently obtained a copy and it confirms date and manner of death - makes for grim reading I must say. I also have his birth, marriage details etc. At the moment I'm very keen to get his service records. Last week I e-mailed the PSNI museum but have not heard anything back from them as yet. Thanks for you offer of assistance - if you could help out with the service records I'd really appreciate that. Don't worry though if its too much bother, only if you are somewhere to look up your own ancestors records. Dublin is not so far away distance wise, but its a difficult time wise at present. I could arrange a date over the next couple months myself...

Hi Indiansign,
Couldn't help adding to the replies you've already had, cos my Grandfather's name (Stephen Kirwan, shot 19th Apr 1921, died next day) is incribed on the RIC Glasnevin memorial immediately above your GGF's.
Was his name Richard (not Robert) Redmond? There's only one Redmond named on the Glasnevin plot - definitely - as I filmed all the names & then transcribed them. I wouldn't trust my memory or typing, but movies don't lie (;0).
The inscription for Richard is:
RICHARD REDMOND CONST. DIED 14th MAY 1921 AGED 43 YRS.
Peter has given that man's RIC no. as 78135.
His is the 26th inscription from top on the righthand panel (of 3) on the plot's stone.
You may have already copped this, but there is a photo of the Glasnevin plot, a map of where it's located & a list of those named on it on this site...

Hi Indiansign
- The RIC numbers were issued incrementally. Auxiliaries were also given RIC numbers as well as their ADRIC numbers.
- there were civil coroners enquiries and by 1921 I'm sure these were replaced by military courts of enquiry as the civil systems broke down. Some references to these can be found in the Irish Times and local papers, I must confess I don't know much else about accessing those records.
- Most of MacKinlays input comes from Abbott's book (see my Books & Reference Materials) and I think the ref to his wife was also in the Irish Times or somesuch. Killarney St, and the Frankford Terraces, were also home to known members of the republican movement and my guess is that one of these individuals may have alerted the gunmen to your ggf's presence.
Redmond was attached to the Auxiliary Division and may have had a role as a driver; worth looking in to.

edit - HO184/50 Auxiliary number 805 (Veterans Division), appointed 3 January 1921,...

Thanks for this Peter. About the numbers allocated to RIC constables, were they simply incremental, or would there have been some format followed? Also, there
was a court of enquiry held into my g-grandfather's death, which I presume would have been standard practice in this scenario - would you happen to know if
that kind of record would be available for viewing, either in the UK National Archive at Kew or anywhere else? The extract you've included from G.A.
McKinlay gives an account that shows my g-grandmother was present at the time of the shooting, a detail I had not previously come across. What's the name
of the publication it comes from? Thanks again

- Not unusual at all for a man to be shot whilst on leave. The IRA policy was to strike at every opportunity and it mattered not that a man was on leave, walking home holding the hand of his child, coming out of Mass or out fishing. All these happened, and more.
- Internments often followed family wishes and in most cases were low key affairs. There was a boycott by Sinn Fein against even helping to bury RIC dead and frequently the police had to commandeer transport and gravediggers or simply do the job themselves. In a few cases there was more of a public display and ceremony.
- There was no entitlement to a medal for simply being killed.
- There are indeed accounts, in several books written by those on both sides of the conflict, that record individual actions. Some of the best can be found in the Bureau of Military History Witness Statements collated around 1947.
There may be references amongst these that you can find, or perhaps that someone might be able to track...

- My G-Grandfather was off duty when he was shot - would this have been unusual during the period 1919-1921?
- Would there have been any "pomp & circumstance" surrounding the funeral of an RIC man? (Or were they quietly buried)
- Would a medal have issued in these circumstances - to next of kin...
