Thankyou
That is extremely helpful and detailed information.Even if Edward was not in the Constabulary, there will be some story to tell as to why not!!
I do feel there will be some truth in there somewhere, even though many of the family tales have been proved to be a little "inventive"
Much appreciated

Hi Barbara
I think you've found a particularly tough nut to crack with Edward Farrell. His career would seem to have started, or perhaps even ended, before the first
records were gathered in 1816. I would say that none of the Edward Farrells you had located were contenders. I've also looked up variants of the Farrell
name, and searched the DMP registers, again without success. If Edward was in the "Irish Constabulary" - and there is no reason to doubt it - then it
may well be that he was in the early baronial police, or perhaps the Peace Preservation Force. If records still exist for these bodies then I'm not aware
of them; but you never know. The problem is that it would only be bodies like the Garda Museum or the PSNI Museum that may be able to assist you, so I'd
suggest you get back to them and double check.
The baronial police - the famous 'barnies' - were a County-based force appointed by a grand jury and who took orders from a...

I had a look at Jim Herlihy's index book in our local library and there are five Edward Farrells listed, though assuming that James' father would
have had to have been born at the turn of the 19th century, all but one seem too late to be him.

It has been suggested to me that Edward may have been a member of an earlier constabulary from which the force was formed.
