I would LOVE to find out any information on the following person:

John FARRAR, born 1889 in County Carlow.

It is been mentioned over the years that "Jack" was a Policeman in Ireland, which could have meant many different things. I've only just learnt
that he was indeed a member (albeit for a very short time) of the Royal Irish Constabulary and that he was born in County Carlow. I'd previously been
looking for him in County Wexford.

Well I must admit I am a little disappointed now. After sending enquiries to several places to get hold of John Farrar's RIC records a week ago, there has
been no response. I was hoping to have heard at least something by now.

Thanks Peter, that is very interesting that they didn't serve in their own County. Now I will know to look outside of Carlow. I have trolled the forum
quite a bit and surprised myself that I had learnt so much about the RIC. I discovered just how much had "soaked in" when relaying the story to
another relative.

Unfortunately I don't know in which month he enlisted as the index available on Ancestry.com only provides the following very basic enlistment information:
INDEX RECORD
Name: Farrar, John

Birth Date/Age: 1889
Birthplace: Carlow
Film #: 2092 or 852092

Thanks for the fabulous replies. I'll certainly look into hunting down his service records and possibly his birth certificate, if possible from a
distance!!

Yes it is a great story and one that has always intrigued myself and a couple of other family members. I'm in the process of sorting out 25+ years of
family research with a view to writing a book. It is fine to gather names and dates, but I'm a fully fledged "story gatherer", and am always
looking for the stories behind the people and as you could imagine this one is a little intriguing.

It is unfortunate for me that he emigrated when he did - arriving in Australia on 4 March 1911 - if he'd just stayed in Ireland for another month he would
have appeared in the 1911 Irish Census which was taken on 2 April!!!

I believe I've located his siblings living in Ardristan, Tullowbeg, Carlow on the 1911 Census. The household was made up of 5 brothers and sisters, ages
ranging...

A very interesting story Leanne and possibly true, though he may have been going it some to meet, bed and evade a girl in the short time he was in the RIC! As
a new constable he would have been carefully watched over by his Sgt and its unlikely he'd have had much free time, but as you'll appreciate the Irish
are a hot blooded and ingenious race. Do get his service record; it probably won't tell you much but it may note an unfavourable record, with date,
possibly even a reason. Of course he may just have had a personality disorder or mental sickness, so be prepared to chase down other avenues. If you find out
the county he served in then local papers may also be a help.

If he was born in 1889 you will be able to order his birth certificate from National Archives Dublin.Visit their on line site to see how you do this. This will
give you the names of his Mother and Father.

Leanne
Based on his birth year I would advise that his service number is 65014.There were only four Farrar's that ever served in the RIC.It was not uncommon for
members of the force to emigrate and it would be shown on the service record as 'emigrate to better himself'.If he was dismissed this will also be
shown on the service record.Other details will include among other things age, height, religion, native county, occupation before joining, marital status,
native county of wife if he married whilst in service, date of appointment, counties in which served, length of service and date of retirement, leaving or
death.

Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints hold service records as does Garda Museum and Archives in Dublin and the Public Records Office,Belfast all on
microfilm.I am not sure of the costs but contact them.I know in the case of Public Records Office,Belfast they will be happy to help.

Its a great story by the way!

He is next heard of on 4 March 1911 when he arrives in Australia aboard the Marathon Sailing Ship. The passenger list records his occupation
