glad you found something. Ievers would have known your GGf or at least his family, although maybe casually in some capacity. Enough for Timothy to approach a JP as opposed to seeking a recommendation through his local police station. It does suggest to me that Ballyroe district would be where the family lived at that point - though his original birthplace may have been elsewhere in Limerick.

I got round to looking up Eyre Ievers. Still no luck with my GGF's place of birth yet.

Do you know how the recommendation process worked? Ievers was a JP - would he have to have known my GGF to put him forward? Would he lived in the same area?

Yes it can be frustrating when the record is fairly thin, but then he was only in the police a relatively short time. The records rarely mention a wifes name, but often reveal what county she was from. as to the J.P., the Eyre surname has a long history in Limerick. It could be that he is Levers Eyre of the Ballyroe district, Kilfinaghta, Limerick. Worth a shot perhaps? These things can be a bit like unravelling the threads of a detective story.

Hi!

Just got around to getting my GGF's record and there's not much on it.

I still can't figure out where he was born specifically.

He was recommended by an Ibers Eyre JP in Limerick, but I can't find any trace of that person to find a district etc

He resigned the RIC in june 1858, withdrew it, then resigned to emigrate in october 1858 - but it doesn't say where to. Plus he was married in april 1858 - but no mention of his wife...why not?

Thank you so much for that Peter! That's a start at least and is more than I had yesterday!

How do I view that record? Do I have to go to Kew or is there another way?

I was born and raised in England, but visited my GM and relatives in Killaloe each summer as a child. I adore the place. But I've never been to Ogonnelloe

He ended up living in Ogonnelloe and died aged 65 with 11 children.

I'm fascinated that he was/may have been in the RIC. I'm going to have to read all of this forum to absorb all the information

Hello Kate. I don't know anything about this man but you should try and get the service record for Timothy Kiely 18533, whose date of entry to the RIC seems most likely. If you then have any follow up questions come back to us.
O'Gonnelloe was a rural station not far from Killaloe, and on the shores of Lough Derg in Co.Clare. It would have been a lonely posting!

My name is Kate. My GGF is like the scarlet pimpernel as far as I can see I'm having so much trouble getting information about him.

His name is Timothy Kiely born 1833 in Limerick

In 1857 he was a witness at a baptism in Co Clare (Ogonelloe) and his residence is down as the Barracks.
In 1858 he married my GGM Mary Sheridan in Co Clare.
There is a gap of 6 years between their Marriage and their first child born and died in 1864 - so after a year and a half of studying what little I have I am presuming he was in RIC and when he married he either had to move due to his wife's family being there and therefore personal connections. Or...
