Here is a photo of some RIC men taken around 1920. The officer seated in the middle is my great grandfather Michael Farrell, service no. 54045. He was posted to Oughterard in 1920 having spent most of his service in Waterford. It would be nice if anybody can identify some of the other men in the picture.

This is an excerpt from the cross examination of my Great Grandfather, there are just over 2 pages of this. I found out from this piece that he had a brother in the R.I.C. which was not something I had heard before. There was mention of a brother who was a policeman in New york however.

Have not checked in here in a while. Regarding the John slator link, I gave the owner of the site a copy of the photo in the hope he might be able to identify his relative in it, unfortunately he could not.
With regard to my Great Grandfather, I came across a document yesterday which has a cross examination of him at a hearing in Dublin Castle in 1901 regarding pay & conditions of the constabulary. He was representing his fellow Waterford constables in a bid for a pay increase. There are several other constables and head constables mentioned in the document.

Heres the link,
<a rel="nofollow" target="_blank"...

Thanks for that Peter, unfortunately I know very little about my great grandfather especially during that time. Even my father was not aware that he had served in Galway until I obtained his service record. I guess it was a period in time that was not discussed very much if at all. After he left the RIC he returned to Waterford where the family remained. According to Jim Herlihy the two RIC men standing second and third from the left were RIC motor drivers and would have been ex-army and more than likely 'Black and Tans'.

What a great photo. Your relation was made Head Constable on 1 Sep 1920 so the photo was taken after that; judging by the overcoat worn by one man and the muffler by another (presumably a driver by the shape of his cap) this was taken in the Autumn of 1920 or 1921. A good mixture of 'old RIC' and some Tans; I'd love to know what the game was and against who. The District Inspector there was DI Sugrue; he and several Galway men (possibly from Oughterard) won gallantry medals in a fierce battle near Kilmilkim. Have any names been passed down through family stories - eg Sgts Walsh, Gilmartin etc? Peter
