I have often wondered just how fearsome the RICAD actually were. In particular if we could travel back in time, and by some mischance were stopped in a country lane by a lorry load of "Tans", what would actually have happened? A routine questioning? A rifle-butt in the face? A cheerful "hello sir"?

Some sources say that they tried to bully and intimidate just about everybody they met (in an attempt, I suppose, to "dominate" the ground). But has the reality been deliberately obscured by decades of hostile propaganda? In his book Irish Voices, Peter Somerville suggests that, to many Irish loyalists, the Tans and the RICAD were regarded as heroes and saviours.

It had been the custom for some time, for several Auxiliary Cadets in a Ford touring car, to call every morning at the Ballsbridge Post Office and receive the mailbag for Beggar's Bush Barracks. At about 9:00 am on Tuesday morning the 14th December 1920, a group of armed civilians took up positions on Pembroke Road and held up all the Tramway traffic to and from Dublin. One of this group in addition in addition to having an automatic pistol was also armed with a rifle. A further section of the attacking party had taken up a position in a laneway leading on to Shelbourne Road and opening onto that thoroughfare, nearly opposite the Post Office. This latter party was largely concealed in the laneway, and the thoroughfare presented its customarily quiet aspect, when the Ford car drew up at the Post Office door a few minutes after 9:00...

As far as I am aware, very little is known or has been written about the use of aircraft in the Irish War of Independence, the official British history of the war in Ireland, known as " Record of the Rebellion in Ireland, 1920 - 1921 ( Vol.1V, Part 111 ) " tells us that aeroplanes were used to disperse crowds near Mountjoy, distribute propoganda leaflets by air, and provided armed protection to convoys and trains. Towards the end of the war, aerial reconnaissance was becoming increasingly important to the Auxiliary and army units, leading to the discovery of arms dumps in the Wicklow Mountains and monitoring the Flying Columns of the I.R.A. in the countryside.
The report does not go into detail of how many aerodomes there were or how many aircraft were stationed in Ireland, or how many pilots were involved, not even what type of planes, except they were two seater with pilot and observer.

I am hoping that readers to this post will be able to contribute and...

Peter Mc RIC, thought you might find the following of interest, it is taken from the "Dublin District Historical Record" and can be seen in the National Archives in Kew, I have recently been sent a book, Fighting for Dublin by William Sheenan which covers the same document, it is a fascinating book that covers the period of history 1919 - 1921 and it has answered many queries and questions, including one that I have posted on your site relating to Curfew and Passes, I will post that information at a later date.

Ref - "F" Company

On 25 May the destruction of the Custom House by active members of the 2nd Bn. Dublin Brigade took place.

On 25 May at about 13.10 hours, information was received from DMP that the Custom House had been rushed by approximately 100 civilians.

Although a lot of information has become known about the Auxiliary Division over the past few years, much of the core information has yet to be re-discovered. One such area is in the Balmoral headgear cloth badge backings or flashes as they are sometimes known. Several Companies still have no flash allocated to them, ie. "E", "R", "Z", and several others are not a 100 % certain, ie. "B", "D". Some flashes exist that don't have a Company, and some Companies appear to have used several different flashes. The one thing they have in common is the metal badge of the R.I.C. centered on the flash. As with most things, there is always an exception and this has shown up in at least four photographs. This is a Balmoral with a skull and crossbones badge worn centre front with no badge backing and no sign of an...
